-The Listing Attic-

These are the verses from the Listing Attic that where in French, roughly translated here in English. Gorey himself has implied that the verses are not very accurate.
(thanks to AngeNoir and John Burke)

There is a young girl in love
Of a man with a shameful behavior;
He takes her each evening
To his black vault
And beats her with villainous complaints

The bars of Trieste
Were slimy and dangerous
sitting among the big chairs
they chat about corpses
and plague victims

A monk in the middle of mass
rose up and cried in distress
"the religious life
is filthy and dreadful"
and he stabbed himself in the ass

In order to cure a bout of fever
A young man chased a hare
He caught it at it's hole
and made a stew
of innards and paws with gin

This book is dedicated to Chagrin
who made a small doll
Without arms and all black
He was awful to see
in fact, absolutely the end

Il y a une jeune fille amoureuse
D'un homme qu'a une conduite honteuse;
Il la mene chaque soir
A son caveau noir
Et la bat avec plaintes crapuleuses

Les salons de la ville de Trieste
Sont vaseux, suraigus, et funestes;
Parmi les grandes chaises
On cause des malaises,
Des estropiéments, et des pestes

Un moine au milieu de la messe
S'eleva et cria en detresse:
'La vie religieuse,
C'est sale et affreuse'
Et se poignarda dans les fesses

Pour guérir un accès de fièvre
Un jeune homme poursuivit un lièvre;
Il le prit à son trou
Et fit faire un ragoût
Des entrailles et des pattes au genièvre

Ce livre est dédié à Chagrin,
Qui fit un petit mannequin:
Sans bras et tout noir
Il était affreux voir;
En effet, absolument la fin
